August 9, 2025, marked the beginning in Girona of the World Masters Orienteering Championships (WMOC 2025), an international sporting event that will bring together more than 3,000 participants from all over the world, with categories ranging from ages 35 to over 100. The event, organized by the Federació de Curses d’Orientació de Catalunya (FCOC), will be held from August 8 to 15, filling various municipalities in the Girona area with sporting activity and an international community spirit.
The runners opened the day with the Sprint qualification race, held in Girona’s historic old town, a venue chosen for its great historical charm and the technical challenges it offers to orienteering athletes. This served as a preview of a week full of competitions taking place across the city, Pals and Cassà de la Selva.

Opening Ceremony: A Moment of Global Fellowship
In the afternoon, the Opening Ceremony took place at the Fontajau Pavilion in Girona, a meeting point where participants, organizers, and institutional representatives officially welcomed the world championships. Speakers included representatives from the FCOC, the Girona City Council, the Provincial Council, and the Government of Catalonia, highlighting the sporting, economic, and social importance of hosting the event in Catalonia. The ceremony was marked by a festive and friendly atmosphere, making Girona the international epicenter of masters orienteering.
